A definition among

so many others...

Appreciative Inquiry is the study of what gives life to human systems when they are functioning at their best. This approach to personal and organizational change is based on the assumption that questioning and dialogue about strengths, successes, values, hopes and dreams are themselves transformative. In short, Appreciative Inquiry suggests that collective and personal change  are at best a relational process of inquiry, based on affirmation and appreciation.

What does it mean to focus on #resources?

The habits of our world, our ways of working and the methods we learn in our education often lead us to analyze problems in order to understand their origins, with the conviction that once the origins of the problem have been understood, we are we will be able to find the solutions. 

We are convinced that working in this way makes us more intimate with the problem, but without being intimate with the solutions which will lead us to transform the situation.

 

The world we live in is quite obsessively oriented towards weaknesses, shortcomings. On the contrary, Appreciative Inquiry is intentionally oriented to seeking resources whatever the situation. Why #obsessionally ? Because it takes conviction and experience to find the resources when the situation is very problematic.  

 

Appreciative Inquiry is always possible, but not always easy to implement!

But then we forget the problems?

This is often the question we are asked. The completeness of reality is both red and green. There is no question of avoiding red naturally. We are not in a blissful exploration of what has worked. The Appreciative Inquiry often starts from the red, because it is often this reality that is presented to us (the problem, the frustration, the lack). Where many other approaches would dig the red, Appreciative Inquiry takes it as an opportunity to dig into what is desired rather than knowing what is no longer desired or even why the problem exists. We represented  this by the Appreciative Inquiry Radar that David Shaked developed. The reality is red and green, and without forgetting red, Appreciative Inquiry takes note of it to bounce back and focus on green.

The 7 assumptions of Appreciative Inquiry


 

  1. In every human system there is something that works well.

  2. Reality directly depends on what we are focusing on.

  3. Reality is being created at every moment and the realities are multiple.

  4. Language defines our reality.

  5. The simple act of asking questions influences the outcome.

  6. If we take elements of the present with you into our future, it is better to take those that are positive.

  7. People have more confidence in their future (the unknown) if they take elements of the present (what is known) with them.

Appreciative Inquiry is more than a method, it is a way of thinking and living marked by a very disruptive paradigm. We created the 5P model to explain it and broadly embrace this approach.
